What a day of basketball yesterday, we can only hope it’s just as exciting today. We’ve still got a few hours until the action kicks off, so read up on some other happenings in the world while you get some hair action.
- David Brandon, former pizza man and Michigan’s new athletic director, made some huge waves by announcing that Michigan Stadium will host it’s first night game in 2011 against Notre Dame. Though my initial reaction was disappointment that I would probably not be in attendance, this is huge. Michigan students have been clamoring for a game under the lights for some time, and it’s nice to see that their voices are being heard. Now if only we could get free Dominos…
- Deadspin has gotten a hold of some of the text messages Tiger Woods sent to pornstar/mistress Joslyn James, and… well you know how they are over there. The messages themselves sound like they’re straight from a porn video. I want to say that I hope this is the last of the Tiger Woods saga, but sadly, I know it’s not true.
- The finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, college hockey’s version of the Heisman trophy, were announced yesterday. Mark Olver from Northern Michigan and Cody Reichard from Miami are the CCHA’s only representatives. Two of the players, Smith (Wisconsin) and Nyquist (Maine) are Red Wings prospects, so you can read up on them at Babcock’s Death Stare. I’m hoping either Smith or Nyquist win it, but I have no idea who the real favorites are.
- Speaking of the Wings, they’re on a bit of a roll right now. Over at A2Y, VooX (yeah, he’s the cool substitute that lets you get away with whatever you want) gives us some good info on Tomas Holmstrom’s future plans. Spoiler: Homer’s going to be a Wing4lyfe. It’s how he wants it and I don’t think any of us are complaining. Don’t miss the photoshop at the bottom, though there’s going to be a few more numbers added to that list, and check back later for their live blog during the game.
- The braintrust running the NHL has finally grown a pair. Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski has been suspended for 8 games for his hit (below) on former teammate Brent Seabrook. Hopefully this means the NHL won’t be afraid to suspend anyone who crosses the line, not just role players.
- Syracuse forward (and D4L name favorite) Arinze Onuaku will not play in tonight’s game against Vermont due to the quad injury he suffered during the Big East tournament. Onuaku hasn’t practiced since getting injured, which makes me think he probably won’t play in ‘Cuse’s second round game either.
- On the other end of the injury bug, both Rodney Stuckey and Ben Wallace will see some action for the Pistons tonight against the Indiana Pacers. Coach John Kuester said that both players will come off the bench, leaving the recent starting 5 intact. I’m not sold on Stuckey playing again this season after what happened, but it’s probably better for his psyche to play now than to take six months off.
- The Detroit Tigers have optioned struggling RHP Armando Galarraga to Triple-A Toledo. Galarraga had a stellar 2008 season before falling off last year. Make sure to check out Bless You Boys, where Kurt touches on this and a couple of the other roster moves the Tigers made yesterday. [via Bless You Boys]
- The fellas at Guyism are busy letting some of their guilty pleasures, like watching America’s Next Top Model, wave freely in the wind. In all seriousness, I saw this episode because my girlfriend was controlling the remote (she puts shit like this on TV to make me study) and I about died when the model got hit with the swinging bell. Thankfully, this was the only episode I saw before I threatened to gouge my eyes out.
Rob’s Highlight of the Day
Without question, today’s highlight is Danero Thomas’s buzzer-beater to give Murray St. a 66-65 win over 4-seed Vanderbilt.
