Friday Random Stuff: Thoughts about Duke Losing

With no more things to preview or recap, that means it’s the return of random posts about anything on Fridays. Today, we are going to talk a little bit about Duke. The picture up top is from SI. As everyone reading the blog probably does, I don’t really like Duke. I don’t think there has ever been a scenario in which I wanted Duke to win. That goes triple for the NCAA tournament. Duke losing day is always something that puts a pep in one’s step. It’s like the day the Yankees get eliminated from the baseball playoffs. It’s not just one thing for Duke to get beat, but it’s a completely other thing for them to get dominated the way they were last night. I don’t know what Sean Miller said to the boys at halftime, but it made them come out in ass kicking mode. Derrick Williams, pictured, had a giant first half to keep the club close, but in the second half, the rest of the team overpowered Duke. The Blue Devils didn’t seem to know what hit them. Something that hit them was this.

Awesome. Not only was it fun to just watch Duke lose on my TV, but twitter added a little something to the mix. It was like there was a little community of people from all over the country watching, and feeling the same joy and shock as I was. When Mr. Horne threw that dunk down, I think it shut down twitter. My response was a little over the top. I believe it was “HOW’D THAT TASTE DUKE BITCH.” Maybe a little over the top. Just a tad.

It’s one thing when a team like Kansas or Kentucky or North Carolina loses, it’s a completely better thing when Duke loses. I know Duke fans that might stumble across this will probably disagree, but hey, no one cares about you. Go count your titles and your recent string of Sweet 16 losses. Last night, it was fun to be a basketball fan. Duke losing is good for everyone.

It shouldn’t go by the wayside the way Arizona played the second half. It’s been a while since a team just straight up dominated an elite opponent in the Big Dance. I’m pretty sure someone could name other examples, but what Arizona did last night was flithy. The thing is, the whole second half, they knew they were going to win. They didn’t think it, they knew it. The Wildcats kicked Duke’s ass, and did it with a smile. Great to watch a team come together for a moment like that. It’s only fitting that this post be capped off with what might have been the top highlight of the game last night, Derrick Williams amazing putback dunk. Have a nice weekend.
