Florida State split a pair of ACC games this week as the Seminoles followed up their first road win of the season on Monday against Clemson with a valiant effort in a loss to No. 15 North Carolina on Saturday. The top performer over those two games was again redshirt freshman guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes.
For the fourth time this season, Rathan-Mayes is the Florida State Basketball Player of the Week. Rathan-Mayes earns honors for the week of January 19th through the 25th.
In Monday’s 59-55 win at Clemson, Rathan-Mayes led the Seminoles with 17 points and tied a career-high with 9 assists which was a game-high as well in Florida State’s first road victory of the season.
Rathan-Mayes followed that up with perhaps the finest performance of his young career, setting a Florida State freshman record with a career-high 35 points in Saturday’s narrow 78-74 loss to North Carolina. Rathan-Mayes also led the team with 4 assists and a pair of steals in the loss.
In all over the two games, Rathan-Mayes averaged 26 points, five rebounds, 6.5 assists and three steals while making six 3-pointers and shooting better than 50 percent from the field. Rathan-Mayes is now the team’s leading scorer for the season, averaging just under 14 points-per-game. His 4.7 assists-per-game average is on pace to be the best mark for any Seminole since Delvon Arrington averaged over six assists during the 2001-02 season.
