Game Balls: FSU-Florida

It was another sloppy performance by Florida State on Saturday and yet, another victory. The Seminoles were able to dig themselves out of an early 9-0 deficit thanks largely to timely defense. FSU quarterback Jameis Winston threw a career-high four interceptions, but improved to 25-0 as a starter in a 24-19 victory over rival Florida.

With the win, Florida State improved to 12-0 and are now an ACC Championship victory over Georgia Tech away from playing in the first College Football Playoff. As the Seminoles turn their attention to the Yellow Jackets, the Noled Out staff hands out game balls for Saturday’s win over Florida.

Offense
Mike Ferguson and Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Dalvin Cook, RB

It was the last game at Doak Campbell Stadium for some very prominent seniors, but the star for the Florida State offense on Saturday was freshman running back Dalvin Cook. Cook averaged six yards-per-carry on a career-high 24 carries, finishing the day with 144 yards rushing — also a career-high. Cook had two receptions for 28 yards in the win.

Defense
Mike Ferguson’s Game Ball: Terrance Smith, LB

Junior linebacker Terrance Smith made just three tackles, but had the play that may have swung the game. With Florida leading 9-0 and inside Florida State’s 10-yard-line, Smith intercepted a deflected Treon Harris pass and raced 94 yards the other way for the Seminoles’ longest touchdown of the season.

Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Mario Edwards Jr., DE
Mario Edwards Jr. finished with just three stops on the day for Florida State, but Edwards was a mainstay in the Florida backfield. Edwards also had a critical pass bat-down at the line of scrimmage in the second half.

Special Teams
Mike Ferguson and Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Roberto Aguayo, K

On what was a horrendous day all around for the Florida State special teams, sophomore kicker Roberto Aguayo did his job. Aguayo made each of his three extra point attempts and banged home his only field goal attempt — from 37 yards out in the fourth quarter. Two of Aguayo’s five kickoffs went for touchbacks.
