Florida State clinched a 39th straight winning season on Saturday with a convincing 45-21 victory over Syracuse at Doak Campbell Stadium. Freshman running back Jacques Patrick scored three rushing touchdowns and wide receiver Travis Rudolph caught three more, marking the first time ever that FSU had a player rush for three scores and a different player catch three in the same game. Still, the best day arguably belonged to the guy who was getting Patrick and Rudolph the ball.
Redshirt junior quarterback Sean Maguire is the Florida State Football Player of the Week for Week 9 after passing for a career-high 348 yards and three scores.
Maguire wasn’t given the start until right before kickoff as regular starter Everett Golson missed the contest with concussion symptoms. Maguire went 23-for-35 passing on the day and did not turn the ball over.
Maguire found Rudolph for touchdowns of 75,45 and 19 yards to help the Seminoles earn their seventh win of the season. The start for Maguire was just the second of his career. In a thrilling 23-17 overtime victory over Clemson last season — his first start — Maguire passed for 304 yards and rallied FSU late.
Maguire completed passes to seven different receivers throughout the day and has led some to speculate that he could take over for Golson as the starting quarterback moving forward.
