In his first Florida State start, senior quarterback Everett Golson passed for over 300 yards and threw four second half touchdowns in a 59-16 season-opening victory over Texas State at Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday night.
Golson, a Notre Dame transfer, finished the night 19-for-25 passing with 302 yards and threw touchdowns to four different players. In a contest that was delayed more than one hour by lightning, sophomore Dalvin Cook paced FSU (1-0) to a 14-0 lead with touchdown runs of 1 and 28 yards in the first quarter.
With help from a fake punt and a muffed punt, Texas State answered with 10 straight points. Chris Nutall scored from four yards out to give the Bobcats (0-1) their first touchdown of the night. Texas State however, managed just 23 total yards in the third quarter while FSU scored touchdowns on each of its first five second half possessions.
Florida State tallied over 600 yards of offense in the win. In relief of Golson, Sean Maguire was 6-for-7 with 68 yards and a 24-yard touchdown pass to Johnathan Vickers.
Cook finished with 156 yards rushing to lead the Seminoles while Mario Pender added 92 yards on the ground and a touchdown. 13 different Seminoles caught a pass for FSU in the victory, led by sophomore Ja’Vonn Harrison, who finished with 77 yards receiving and a score.
Texas State quarterback Tyler Jones finished 16-for-25 passing, but for just 100 yards. Backup Connor White led a 15-play scoring drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass to Chris French.
With the victory, the Seminoles improved to 6-0 in season-openers under head coach Jimbo Fisher. Florida State will remain home next Saturday to take on South Florida. Texas State will play its home-opener against Prairie View A&M.
