After dropping a heartbreaking series to top-ranked Virginia last weekend, Florida State rebounded with a three-game sweep over a Minnesota club fighting for its NCAA Tournament life. The series was scheduled to begin on Friday, but weather forced the Seminoles and Golden Gophers to play a doubleheader on Saturday.
After two very competitive games on Saturday, the Seminoles took care of business in a big way on Sunday. With a 36-11 record, the Seminoles will visit Stetson on Tuesday before getting back to ACC action at North Carolina next weekend. Looking back at a very competitive series at Dick Howser Stadium, here’s how the ‘Noles swept the Gophers:
Minnesota 4, Florida State 5
Saturday, May 3rd (Game 1 of a Doubleheader)
John Nogowski delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to score D.J. Stewart as the Seminoles took the first game of a doubleheader. Stewart was able to tie the game on a RBI single that scored Josh Delph earlier in the inning. FSU took a 3-1 lead into the ninth, but Minnesota third baseman Tony Skjefte’s two-run double highlighted a three-run frame that gave the Golden Gophers a 4-3 lead. Stewart scored two runs in the game while Nogowski and center fielder Ben DeLuzio each drove in a pair. With Jameis Winston suspended, Gage Smith struggled to close the contest for Florida State, allowing three runs in just 2/3 of an inning.
Minnesota 2, Florida State 3
Saturday, May 3rd (Game 2 of a Doubleheader)
John Nogowski and Jose Brizuela combined for six of Florida State’s seven hits, and two of its three runs as the Seminoles held off Minnesota to sweep Saturday’s doubleheader. Nogowski was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Mike Compton was solid in 7 2/3 innings on the mound. With runners on the corners and one out, Peter Miller came in to strike out both of the batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Minnesota 1, Florida State 7
Sunday, May 4th
Four different Florida State pitchers worked on Sunday as the Seminoles completed the sweep of Minnesota. Dylan Silva allowed just a hit in three shutout innings to pick up his second win of the season. Both John Nogowski and Jose Brizuela stayed hot as the two combined for five hits, three runs scored and as many RBIs. Brizulea’s two-run home run in the seventh put the game out of reach. Josh Delph, D.J. Stewart and Justin Gonzalez each scored a run and drove in another for FSU. Tony Skjefte scored the lone Minnesota run of the day.
