The fan base likely won’t rave about it, but Florida State notched a third straight top 10 finish at the release of the final polls on Tuesday. After winning the national championship last season, Florida State will finish tied for fifth in the AP Poll and sixth in the Amway Coaches Poll in 2014. The Seminoles were defeated by Oregon 59-20 on New Year’s Day in the Rose Bowl — college football’s first ever semifinal.
National champion Ohio State topped the polls, followed by national runner-up Oregon. TCU and Alabama were third and fourth respectively in each poll. In the AP Poll, Florida State and Michigan State were tied at No. 5 and in the Coaches Poll, the Spartans sat one spot higher than FSU.
Florida State finishes outside the top 5 in the Coaches Poll despite being one of just three teams from a major conference to suffer only a single loss. FSU went 13-1 this season.
The highest ranked 3-loss team was fellow ACC school, Georgia Tech, who finished seventh in the coaches and eighth in the AP Poll. The Yellow Jackets defeated Mississippi State in the Orange Bowl, 49-34 on New Year’s Eve. Clemson finished 15th in each poll after throttling Oklahoma 40-6 in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Louisville, who lost to Georgia 37-14 in the Belk Bowl, finished at No. 24 in each poll.
Florida State’s No. 6 ranking is the lowest the Seminoles have been in any poll since October 6th of 2013. Florida State finished first in each poll last season. In 2012, the Seminoles finished 10th in the AP Poll and eighth in the Coaches Poll. Florida State has now finished ranked in the top 25 in each of the last five seasons.
