Co-champion Florida State heads list of league honorees
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season co-champion Florida State captured three of the league’s five major women’s soccer awards for the 2014 season, as voted upon by the ACC’s 14 head coaches and announced on Thursday.
Seminoles midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir was voted the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, while fellow FSU senior Kristin Grubka earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. FSU’s Mark Krikorian was voted the ACC Coach of the Year.
Virginia senior Danielle Colaprico was voted the ACC Midfielder of the Year, and North Carolina forward Megan Buckingham received the nod as ACC Freshman of the Year.
Brynjarsdottir was a major force throughout the regular season, which saw Florida State post a 16-1-1 overall record and earn the No. 1 seed in this week’s ACC Championship with a 9-0-1 league mark. The Icelandic native currently leads the Seminoles in points (29), goals (13), shots (61) and game-winning goals (4). Brynjarsdottir ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in seven offensive categories while leading in goals per game, points per game and shots in game. She has tallied four multi-point games on the year and tied a career-high with two goals twice. Brynjarsdottir is the third FSU student-athlete to be named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and the first since Tiffany McCarty in 2009.
Grubka, of Melbourne, Florida, leads a Seminole defense that has posted 12 shutouts in 18 games and finished the regular season allowing just two goals in ACC play – the fewest allowed against league opponents in school history. FSU has allowed a total of 99 shots thus far, an average of just 5.5 per game. Grubka is the second Seminole to be voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Year following Kassey Kallman’s selection last season.
Krikorian was voted the ACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time. The veteran coach’s Seminole squad will enter the ACC Championship as the nation’s second-ranked team and owns wins over three ranked opponents. FSU ranks fourth nationally in points scored (8.78 per game) and is tied for the nation’s third-best winning percentage (.917).
Virginia’s Colaprico is part of a Cavalier squad that stands 17-1 overall, 9-1 in league play and will enter the ACC Championship as the third seed and the nation’s No. 4 ranked team. The Freehold, New Jersey, native has started all 17 of the Cavaliers’ games this season. She is leads the ACC in assists with 14, tying the Virginia single-season record. She has also scored six goals this season and ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 26 points. Her 39 career assists rank second in school history.
North Carolina’s Buckingham is the sixth Tar Heel to be voted ACC Freshman of the Year and the first since Lindsay Tarpley in 2002. The Novi, Michigan, native has appeared in all 16 of UNC’s matches with 14 starts. She is tied for the team lead in goals with four and ranks fifth in total points scored with eight. Two of her goals were game-winners, helping nationally fifth-ranked UNC (12-2-2, 9-0-1) to a share of the ACC regular-season crown.
Brynjarsdottir and Grubka earned All-ACC First Team honors as a league-leading six Seminoles were voted to the first, second or third teams. Virginia and UNC each placed five players on the squad, with Colaprico selected to the first team and Buckingham earning third-team honors.
The 2014 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship opens Friday, Nov. 7 at the UNC Greensboro Soccer Stadium with a pair of semifinal matches. No. 1 seed Florida State will play No. 4 seed Notre Dame in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m., while No. 2 seed North Carolina and No. 3 seed Virginia will meet in the second semifinal at 8 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN3. Sunday’s Championship match will kick off shortly after 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
