Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants was able to speak with Alex Frolov about his comments in the Russian article I posted earlier today and said this when asked if he is happy in New York…
“Yeah, I am,” Frolov said. “He (the Russian reporter) asked me about a trade. I said I never think about it. I’ve never asked for a trade. I didn’t discuss it with Torts. I guess he was trying to make up a story or to find something.”
Gross also has quotes from Torts on AFro…
“He’s improved in, for me, that most important part of his game and that was defensively,” Tortorella said. “Because if you’re not scoring, you can’t hurt the team away from the puck. I think he’s improved there. I think he’ll find a way. He had a couple of great chances on the power play. He had a tip when he fell on his butt there, and had a great chance in the third period on the power play. The puck’s not going in for him. As I’ve explained to him, we want to him to continue to try and concentrate on shooting more, on being around the net more and not behind it. I don’t have a crystal ball. I want him to keep trying. I want him to continue to work away from the puck or all things fall apart then. Hopefully we can grind him through it and he can find a streak, find some confidence as far as some production.”
Finally Torts talks Gaborik needing to step up his game…
“Yes, and it’s not always about helping Gabby, Gabby’s got to help them, too,” Tortorella said. “You talk about trading deadline, free agency, you’re never locked in there, you never know where you’re going to be. This is our team and we’ve got to be more balanced and certainly more consistent. That line simply wasn’t consistent, it had one good line and really struggled and obviously hurt us in the Ottawa game. We’ve got to find someone and we will. Some of the onus goes on Gabby. He’s that good a player to not always us finding somebody to help him, him helping the other players. He’s that good. So it’s a little bit of a two-way street there.”
…great job by Gross questioning AFro on his comments.
…Torts has given Gabby a little heat this year. Will be interesting to see how the star forward will respond.
