Galaxy Back to Cup Winning Form

I think it’s safe to say that the LA Galaxy team that won MLS Cup last year is finally back. Not only have they won their last 5 games, they have kept clean sheets in their last 4 matches. Friday night, LA Galaxy played against the Colorado Rapids and won 2-0.

Marcelo Sarvas

David Beckham missed this match because of an injury to his left ankle. However, LA’s captain, Landon Donovan was finally playing for them again, after being injured in the USA-Mexico friendly last month. He had played earlier this week in LA Galaxy’s 4-0 reserve win over Portland Timbers. With Beckham’s absence from the starting line-up, Bruce Arena decided to start with LA’s newest signing, Christian Wilhelmsson in his place. Many people were surprised to see him starting so soon, but gave him a chance anyway.

LA Galaxy had their first chance of the night when Galaxy defender Sean Franklin went forward and took a shot; he was a few inches wide. Of the two teams, LA had more chances. In fact, Colorado’s keeper made 6 saves in that game. Well, LA didn’t have to wait long before scoring their first goal of the night. Ireland National Team captain, Robbie Keane, scored in the 15th minute after a great ball from Donovan and Marcelo Sarvas. This was the only goal scored by either team and it was 1-0 LA at HT.

Another reason LA was able to keep a clean sheet was, not just the backline or Saunders, but also because of Sarvas. Here’s his incredible save against Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey.

This win over Colorado moves LA Galaxy up to 3rd place in the Western Conference. They have the same number of points as Real Salt Lake, but are ahead thanks to goals scored. Next up for LA is a trip to Puerto Rico, where they will play Puerto Rico Islanders in the CONCACAF Champions League. The last time these two teams met, LA Galaxy won 4-0, using what was considered the reserve team. After that, they will come back to Los Angeles and take on Toronto FC.
