After breaking out the bats for once on this home stand last night the Brewers found themselves in another pitchers duel in the series finale with the Colorado Rockies. Despite a great start by ace Yovani Gallardo the Brewers couldn’t find the offense to pick him up a victory, dropping the rubber match in the series 3-1 to the Rockies.
Colorado got to Gallardo right off the bat, going up 1-0 in the first inning, but Yo was able to rebound and didn’t allow another run in his 7 innings of work. Unfortunately set-up man Francisco Rodriguez couldn’t pick him up as he allowed an infield hit, a walk, and then a Michael Cuddyer bases clearing double that put Colorado up 3-1 in the top of the 8th inning.
The Brewers couldn’t find an answer to Rockies starter Jeremy Guthrie for most of the day, but were able to break through for a run in the bottom of the 4th to tie the game up at 1-1. Guthrie only allowed 3 hits and 3 walks and allowed his defense to help pick him up in his 7 innings of work.
Milwaukee had a chance to comeback in the bottom of the 8th when they put two runners on with no outs, but couldn’t get them home. They squandered their best chance to do some damage in the game with the heart of the lineup (Braun, Ramirez, and Hart) finally having runners on in front of them without any of them being able to advance the base runners.
Starting Pitchers:
MIL: Yovani Gallardo (1-1, 3.65 ERA) – 7IP, 6H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 8K
COL: Jeremy Guthrie (2-1, 5.92 ERA) – 7IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 2K
Brewers Highlights:
Mat Gamel: 1-3, 1RBI
Ryan Braun: 0-2, 2BB, 1 run
Rockies Highlights:
Troy Tulowitzki: 2-5, 1 run
Michael Cuddyer: 1-4, 2RBI’s
Marco Scutaro: 2-5
Notes:
– The Brewers should’ve had a lead-off hitter on base in the 9th inning as Mat Gamel scorched a liner that Marco Scutaro couldn’t hang on to but got a throw off and Gamel was called out, but replays clearly showed he was safe. Getting the lead-off hitter on base would’ve changed quite a bit in the inning and that blown call seemed to take any chance at momentum away from the bottom of the Brewers order.
– Gallardo was masterful once again and it seems that he’s put his opening day performance well in to the rear-view window.
– This homestand showed that Aramis Ramirez could be on his way to getting out of his early season slump as he went 5-for-21 over the six game slate against NL West foes Los Angeles and Colorado. Outside of these two series’ Ramirez had only two hits to begin the year.
