Following the score of a game on the phone is always a nerve-racking experience. For a while tonight, the Pirates and Brewers traded zeroes at the same pace as the Penguins and Lightning and I nervously kept checking back to see if anyone had even gotten a hit. Through four innings, there was nothing. I considered asking the waitress, who already seemed put out by having to put the Penguins game on a TV, to turn the Reds and Padres game that no one was watching to Pirates and Brewers, but elected not to press my luck. When I saw that Kevin Correia was carrying his no-hitter into the sixth, I figured that if he made it through the inning I’d have no choice but to ask.
A few minutes later, I checked back and the Pirates were down 4-0. This is being a Pirate fan early in the season in a nutshell; they string you along just long enough to get your hopes up, and then let it all come crashing down. In the grand scheme of things, an ugly start by Correia or getting shut out by Shaun Marcum and co. doesn’t seem like a bad thing. Under the microscope of April, a third straight home loss in front of a tiny crowd just seems depressing. Hopefuly the Pirates can salvage something from their first homestand of the season on Thursday night.
