Sorry for the late recap: the site went down briefly after the game ended last night and since that was well after 1 AM, I decided to just call it a night.
Last night’s game sort of felt like the losing streak the Pirates just ended, only it happened in condensed fashion. Early on, James McDonald looked pretty good, but the Pirates weren’t doing anything useful on offense. Then the Giants scored, and scored again, and scored again and suddenly it was 3-0 and the Pirates couldn’t make any headway against Madison Bumgarner. The Pirates threatened twice but they couldn’t sync their rallies: Andrew McCutchen started the eighth with a double off of Sergio Romo, the first hit or baserunner he’s allowed since June 29th (he’s put down 31 in a row), but no one could get him home. In the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases, but McCutchen struck out to end the game and the bullpen had already let the lead swell to 6-0 at that point, so it may not have even mattered.
Instead of winning two in a row, the Pirates have now lost 15 of 17. Afternoon game today lets them try to salvage the series and get the heck out of San Francisco.
