Nineteen consecutive losing seasons. Nineteen. That’s so ludicrous it doesn’t even seem real. I never really thought the Pirates were contenders this year, but I did briefly think it was possible for them to finish above .500.
I say again and again that the Pirates shouldn’t worry about finishing .500 because it’s not a real goal and so it’s functionally not something that I waste time worrying about. That’s true in that I don’t care if the Pirates win 75 or 82 games so long as the right things are happening behind the scenes, or I wouldn’t be more excited about 82 wins than 75 wins if I thought the wrong things were happening. If you’re only concerned with the future (the perpetual state of Pirate fans), wins are only one predictor of future performance and they’re not really even the best predictor. So what I want to say do with this loss today is shrug and say that it doesn’t make that much of a difference.
But my goodness, nineteen straight losing seasons is overwhelming. I was in second grade when the Pirates last went to the playoffs, if they stretch this thing out one more year there’s a good chance I’ll have my PhD before they even put together another winning season. That’s just too much to even really think about.
