When game 2 of the season opening series begun (more than 2 hours and 40 minutes after being scheduled), Mike Wacha started off ’14 like he left ’13 – as the best pitcher in baseball. 6 2/3 innings. 1 BB. 7 SO. And in my humble opinion, not really his best stuff.
Side: You tell me who’s better since last September? We have all season to see if Wacha keeps claim to the title belt… but for now, he’s done nothing to prove he isn’t the man.
Siegrist came in. Got his man. Martinez came in. Cleared the top of the order in the 8th. This was about as ideal a pitched game as a team can have.
You know, except the Cardinals can’t score.
Carlos Beltran isn’t walking through that door, Rick Pitino might tell us. There are no players waiting to get off the DL. The Cardinals hitters are healthy & able. The excuses for the lack of O aren’t there.

Both Peralta and Bourjos, the big off-season acquisitions, have been blanked and sport matching .000 batting averages. Matt Adams is serving up a steaming pot of LOBsters (4 last night). Allen Craig – Allen Craig is playing, right?
No Carlos Martinez didn’t pitch well in the bottom of the 9th.
But this loss was on the hitters. Sans a long fly ball in a homer-friendly park, the Cardinals offense has been totally at a loss the first 2 games of 2014.

With 6 of the total 38 games played against the Reds and Pirates coming in the first 6 games of the season, the Cardinals are in a unique position to put separation between themselves and their main competition for the NL Central.
The season really starts tonight against the Reds. Will the offense join in the festivities?
