Not much to say here… the Brewers were just flat-out beat by the Padres again, getting shut out for the 3rd time in 4 games. The Brewers were only able to muster 3 hits this afternoon, and those hits all came in the first 2 innings.
Outside of Yovani Gallardo‘s performance Saturday night, this was just a forgettable series. While only scoring 2 runs in 4 games is pretty pathetic no matter who you’re playing, it would be unfair to chalk this series up to the Brewers struggling. San Diego has now won 13 of their past 16, and their pitching has been among the best in the National League (3rd in ERA, 2nd in opponent batting average, 3rd in opponent OPS, 3rd in WHIP).
While the bats were unable to get going again, it didn’t help that Randy Wolf turned in a second straight start in which he was hit around the park. After giving up 10 hits to the Pirates in his last start, Wolf gave up 4 earned runs today, including back-to-back solo shots in the 5th inning. Things could have been a lot worse, though — in addition to the 6 hits he allowed, he also walked 6.
With the Padres being so good at home, I don’t know if many people would have predicted the Brewers to win more than a game or two this series. But the way they lost the series was pretty demoralizing… perhaps even more demoralizing than losing a home series to the Pirates. The Brewers have Monday off, but will start a series against the Dodgers on Tuesday. At least the Brewers should be able to score some runs — LA’s pitching has been underachieving this year, but the offense has been stellar. Expect a few slugfests.
