Game 28: Sabres vs Bruins Recap

Montreal Canadiens v Buffalo Sabres

OK, so I’m going to do my Sabres game recaps a little different. I’m going to ask some questions and provide you with the answers. Sounds basic enough, right?

Favorite moment of the game
Steve Montador fighting that assclown, Johnny Boychuk. I totally forgot about this clown. Doesn’t his name sound like the character of a really bad 80’s movie, where he played the high school bully? Or maybe he was fighting for Cobra Kai in the Karate Kid? Anyways, I had to be reminded that he caused Vanek’s injury in the playoffs and I was happy to see Montador take issue with Boychuk going after Pominville. Overall, the Sabres seem to be alot more pissed off as of late, as they have been getting into multiple fights. Hey, I’m not complaining about that.

Moment that made me smile
How excited was Luke Adam when he scored his first NHL game? Not only was he thrilled, but the look of his teammates really got to me. I guess Adam must be really popular in the Sabres locker room. Even still, you gotta be excited about what we are seeing with the kid. I know it’s still early in his career, but do you remember how lost he looked in his first NHL game? Now, he’s playing with confidence and I really hope he sticks around with the parent club. Send Gerbe down when Connolly gets healthy. Better yet, have Terry Pegula buyout Tinny Tim when he buys the team.

Least favorite moment of the game
WTF are you doing Mike Weber? Just a terrible giveaway by the rookie on the Bruins 2nd goal.  Now, I don’t consider myself a hockey expert, but what are you doing trying to clear the puck up the middle of the ice from the corner? Just stupid. I know he’s been struggling as of late, but I still think the Sabres need to ride the Weber ship. He’s young and he brings a toughness to the blue line that we haven’t seen since Jay McKee.  I also think it’s important for him to get as much seasoning as possible. Plus, I don’t want to see Rivet back in the line-up. I also think having him pair up with the anemic Chris Butter, isn’t doing him any favors.

Annoying TV moment
I guess the VS intermission crew are exchanging notes with the MSG producers. Um, yeah, nothing like doing the overkilled topic of “knowing when to drop the gloves.” Ugh! How about we just look at the hot, blond reporter next time? OK, we can’t. My suggestion is for the producers to actually interview players from around the league. Promote the individuals. Also, on a sidenote, I know it was cute the first 30 times that I saw the kid jump up and down about getting the Ovechkin jersey for the holidays, but like Christmas songs, it loses it flavor rather quickly.

What positive I learned about the Sabres
You know, these guys seem to be more excited than normal when scoring a goal. I don’t know what gives. Maybe having a bunch of guys with less than 3 years of NHL experience, is doing that to this youthful squad.

What needs to change
Lets just end the Nathan Gerbe on the first line experiment, please? He’s just not good enough right now and I think the offense’s apex of the season (which isn’t saying much) was when Tyler Ennis was playing along side Roy and Vanek.

Something I learned tonight
I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like the Bruins. I think if they had that star offensive player, ala Crosby or Ovechkin to hate, they would easily be up there as the most hated Sabres opponent. I know they have Chara, but I don’t really hate the guy because he’s just a goofy looking Andre The Giant Wannabe. And I liked Andre the Giant as a kid.

Overall
Well, It’s pretty touch for me to fault the effort, because it was there tonight. It was also a fun game between these two, normally boring ass teams.  However, how many chances did this team have tonight? You have the lead and you have to gain ground on the teams that you are trying to catch. Boston, of course, is one of those teams. I know the Bruins goalie is awesome, but this team still has issues with scoring. It’s the same swan song that I’ve been writing since 2008. Just not good enough. I also thought the team was a little shell shocked after the Bruins tied it. The team looked totally out of sync and were lucky to get to OT for the way they played in the last 6 minutes of the game.
