Game 4 Recap: Bolts No Match For Varlamov And Avs

Playing from behind will eventually bite you and it bit the Lightning hard last night. Matt Duchene scored twice and  Andreas Martinsen and Carl Soderberg each scored for the Colorado Avalanche who blanked the Bolts at Amalie Arena 4-0. Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov was sterling, stopping all 27 shots he faced.

Ben Bishop stopped only 12 of 16 shots of which one was his  5,000th save as a Lightning goalie. He set the Bolts record on October 13 when he passed Darren Puppa.

Steven Stamkos and Ondrej Palat had rough nights ending the game with a -3 rating each.

Beat writer Joe Smith reminds us:

History wasn’t on the Lightning’s side. The last time it won four straight games after giving up the first goal in each was Nov. 18-25, 1995. Its three-game streak after giving up the first goal was the first since 2001. Tampa Bay, outscored 5-0 in the first period this season, has led for just 26 minutes, 38 seconds in the first four games.

“You can’t keep playing from behind and we’ve played from behind all four games,” Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. “It would be nice to have to lead. You can’t keep testing fate because eventually you’re not going to be able to come back.”
