After scoring in the first and last minute of the game, the Jackets were able to pull through with a 2-1 win against the visiting Colorado Avalanche. A stroke of luck turned the tide but was a good moment for the team.
Highlights:
Good, Better, Best
Good: Cody Goloubef
One of the better developments of the night was the emergence of Cody Goloubef last night. He had been relegated to a smaller role on the team and played well in the time given to him. He was awarded last night with an assist on the Jack Johnson goal. His even strength Corsi percentage was tied for second best on the team at 59.26%, which is good for the long and short term. David Savard will be out for a period of time and Goloubef can show his worth to the organization while Savard recovers.
Better: Brandon Dubinsky
Dubinsky started the evening with a goal and he continued to contribute throughout the evening. He has always been a rock on the penalty kill and has even started to see more power play time as well. His contributions will only be magnified more as he assumes the first line center role after the Johansen trade. He had a 57% even strength Corsi percentage which further proves his dominance in driving play. This situation may end up being a blessing in disguise for the veteran center.
Best: Joonas Korpisalo
It is still early to crown him but they may have found their next backup. Korpisalo is still very young and shouldn’t be thrusted into such a large role but he has handled his role on the team with grace. Getting called up and called down can’t be easy but his level of play has remained steady. Last evening he stopped 29 of 30 shots and ended up with a .967sv% which is all you can ask for from a goalie. This raises his season save percentage to .909 which is second best on the team. I, for one am excited to see the future of Korpisalo’s game.
