In past seasons, when both the Nets and Knicks weren’t deeply under .500, the New York City basketball rivalry has been a lot of fun. This year, it hasn’t. The Knicks have been dreadful and the Nets, with their exorbitant payroll, have failed to live up to expectations even with their recent resurgence.
The season series has been dominated by the Nets so far, as Brooklyn won the first two meetings in November and December with relative ease. However, we know that in games between these two teams–regardless of their records–anything can happen, evidenced by the Knicks’ 3-1 winning of last season’s series even as they failed to make the playoffs.
Brooklyn has been playing better lately but the same certainly cannot be said for Derek Fisher’s team. It snapped a 16-game losing skid with three wins in a row late in January but has gone just 2-3 since, losing to the Hornets, Pacers and Celtics. For a team some predicted to make the playoffs before the season, it couldn’t get much worse.
Probable Lineups
NYK- Jose Calderon (PG), Langston Galloway (SG), Carmelo Anthony (SF), Lou Amundson (PF), Jason Smith (C)
BKN- Jarrett Jack (PG), Alan Anderson (SG), Joe Johnson (SF), Kevin Garnett (PF), Mason Plumlee (C)
Final Thoughts
The Nets are no superpower but they cannot lose, at home, to the Knicks and expect to be playing meaningful basketball in April and May, it’s that simple.
