In what ended up being one of their most complete games of the season, the Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 via the shootout.
Highlights:
Good, Better, Best
Good: Brandon Saad
After a strong start that began with power play goals in nearly every game, Saad has slowed down a bit. That isn’t an indictment of Saad, all goal scorers are streaky but it is always nice to see your big pickup from the offseason get on the score sheet. His goal last night was his 20th goal of the season and puts him three back of his career high. While his goal wasn’t flashy, he is a player that picks up dirty goals around the net, that others tend to forget about. This year hasn’t gone as planned but one thing is certain, Brandon Saad has had a damn good year.
Better: Stepping up for Joonas
This is the first game in a really long time that Joonas Korpisalo didn’t save the Blue Jackets butts. He had a .889sv% his lowest save percentage in recent memory and they were still able to pull out a victory. The team fell behind multiple times in this game and really shouldn’t have been in it. but luckily the offense finally stepped up for their goaltender and played a good, tight, offensive game. Beating the Ducks in shots on goal may not seem like a big deal but for a team that has been constantly beaten in that area, this is an encouraging sign.
Best: Nick Foligno
Foligno is obviously not having the year that he envisioned. While it hasn’t been the 70+ point season, that he had last year, he is still having an okay year. As a winger he is leading the team in assists, including the two he had this past evening. It is interesting that he is playing on the fourth line at the moment but he is once again showing that he is an efficient player, that can help the team no matter the situation.
