The ever-mercurial Nets, following an impressive four-win-in-five-game stretch, got crushed by the Boston Celtics at the Barclays Center on Monday night in a really important game for both teams. A win, and the Nets would have leapt ahead of Boston while tying up the season series, which is crucial for a potential tiebreaking scenario. A loss, and Brooklyn fell 1.5 games off the Celtics’ pace while losing the series.
Brooklyn swept a weekend back-to-back with the Bucks and Pacers, setting them up nicely for the stretch run of the playoff push. Now, they’re still in the hunt–1.5 games (actually more like 2.5 because of potential tiebreakers) is doable to make up in 13 games–but need to really step their game up, and that can start tonight in Charlotte.
The Nets and Hornets have split their season series so far, with each team blowing the other out on the road. Brooklyn made over 60 percent of its threes in a December rout of the Hornets in Charlotte while, three weeks ago at Barclays, Al Jefferson, Gerald Henderson and Marvin Williams combined to score 56 en route to cruising to a 115-91 victory. Now, whoever wins this game gets the season series and, therefore, the advantage if these teams finish the season with the same record. Extremely important.
Probable Lineups
BOS- Deron Williams (PG), Markel Brown (SG), Joe Johnson (SF), Thaddeus Young (PF), Brook Lopez (C)
CHA- Kemba Walker (PG), Gerald Henderson (SG), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (SF), Marvin Williams (PF), Al Jefferson (C)
Final Thoughts
Hornets point guard and Bronx native Kemba Walker (knee) missed the last matchup between these teams but is back tonight and will probably start over veteran Mo Williams. Al Jefferson (knee) was a question mark for this one but will play while Cody Zeller (shoulder) is a no-go. Brooklyn should have its full complement of players, without Mirza Teletovic of course.
