Paul Maholm made a great start, but the Pirates were dominated by the opposing pitcher, made some stupid outs on the base paths, and couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it.
I feel like I’ve probably written this recap at least three or four times this year, but here it is again. Brandon Morrow struck out ten Pirates in seven innings and in the one inning that the Pirates really got something going agains thim, Neil Walker ran right into an out at home plate. Paul Maholm did a fine job in terms of run prevention tonight even if his other numbers (nine hits, two walks, one strikeout) weren’t great, but there just wasn’t enough offense to back him up. The Blue Jays certainly made their own share of base running bluders (Yunel Escobar ran right into an out at second stretching a single into a double, Jose Bautista fell asleep at second and got nabbed by Chase d’Arnaud on what should’ve been a routine groundout to first).
Really, it boils down to Morrow being better than Maholm tonight. When a starter’s as good as Morrow was, your team isn’t going to win all that often.
