Game From Obscurity

Yup, it’s the second installment of “what is happening on the outskirts of college football”. You know, in case you’ve decided that the Showdown in the Shoe ain’t worth watching.

Over in North Carolina, it’s time for the Division 2 clash between Chowan and Brevard, pitting the Hawks against the Tornadoes.

Nestled in North Carolina (it’s required to use the word “nestled” when describing NoCar), both colleges hail from religious backgrounds. Brevard came to be when two Methodist schools combined, and traces it’s heritage back to a one room log cabin schoolhouse. Their website talks about the impact the school has had on Transylvania County, but little about the impact Transylvania has had on the school.

Chowan is a Baptist school founded to honor the Native American Algonquin Chowanook tribe. Their code of conduct specifies that there is no “hitting of golf balls on campus, except for the driving range”, as well as the standard drugs and alcohol prohibitions. Which would you rather have- a drunk student, or one who’s working on their short game?

Although, if they play golf like I do, both options are a distinct possibility.
