Our regular readers may notice that one of the team has been less present as we’ve headed toward kickoff of the 2010 season. Yup, we’ve been doing this whole thing while playing shorthanded. Short-witted, too… but that’s typical.
Today we’re excited to announce that our partner “Former Buckeye Rob Harley” is now “Former Buckeye, Coach Harley”, and has assumed new responsibilities as the linebackers and specials team assistant coach for Ohio Dominican University.
Since ODU opens their season this weekend, it’s only logical that we highlight their clash against Northwood University, from Midland Michigan. And we all know how Rob feels about Michigan.
Actually, “from Midland Michigan” is a bit of a misnomer, since “Northwood” has residential locations in Texas and Florida as well… I’m not really sure how either of these schools meet the “north” or “wood” part of moniker, but what do I know? Heck, they even offer Adult Learning options out here in Cerritos California; Cerritos is not in the San Fernando Valley, or “adult learning” might have a different set of implications.
Founded in 1959, Northwood has historically sought to create leaders in management; they are big fans of free enterprise. Famous alumni include the Redskins’ Chris Wilson, former ABA/NBA star Jerry Pettway, and Jono Jumamoy, the mayor of Inabanga, Bohol in the Philippines.
According to our insider, the Timberwolves are running a similar offense to the one that gave the Buckeyes problems in last year’s season opener, and are led by Aaron Shavers, a transfer from Alcorn State (Steve McNair’s alma mater). Through the air, Shavers will be passing to a couple of tall wide receivers; Rob’s boys will have their hands full all day. Northwood fell last week to Wayne State, and are looking to rebound as they begin GLIAC play.
Located in the homeland of Columbus Ohio, ODU was initially the “College of St. Mary of the Springs”, and seeks to follow the Dominican Order’s theology and philosophy of liberal arts education. While Northwood seeks to manage, ODU will ensure that their institution is effective. They count Bill Simmons’ favorite curly headed pitcher as their most famous alum… not too shabby.
The ODU Panthers are entering their first season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, home of perennial national football power Grand Valley State University. If you’re gonna’ go, go big, right? They return their top receiver, their quarterback, and their four top rushers from a team that went 7-3 last year. In the trenches, ODU has four offensive linemen coming back and will have significant experience in the front four. Rob will be working with two senior linebackers, as well as a punter that has transferred to ODU from *shudder* Penn State.
Kickoff is at noon, which will give you plenty of time to catch the first half before heading over to the ‘Shoe for the Miami game. Good luck, Rob!
