Game From Obscurity

Time for another voyage into the unexplored realms of the college football world, way out past the mermaids and krakens and heffalumps… you get the drift.

This week, we head back into the Division Two of the NCAA, the smaller programs that are most likely to be made an example of for minor infractions in order to prove that the NCAA is in control.

Ahem.

Anywho, this week’s matchup is between a couple of Catholic Institutions that are a part of the great Northeast-10 Conference. Let’s get ready to rumble!

Diagramming the triple option

Coming of of a bye week, the Hawks of St. Anselm are currently 1-5 with their only win coming in conference against our good friends at PACE. Freshman quarterback Tyrae Woodson-Samuels is coming off of “Rookie of the Week” honors and will be facing his second career start. He replaces sophomore Michael Pierce, who was the D2 player of the week earlier in the season. Shane O’Donnell is sixth in the conference in tackles for a loss; Kyle Harris is second in passes defended. Another note: last season, the Hawks won a 5 overtime matchup; here’s hoping they won’t have to go through that again.

Founded by the Benedictines in 1889, Saint Anselm College prides itself on how welcoming and inclusive their campus is for anyone who wants to be a part of their community. Their reputation as a “College with a Conscience” is a welcomed respite from those institutions who are just flat out evil, don’t you think? Named after the “Philosopher Priest“, the college is one of the greatest ones that one can imagine, proving that it’s either one of the greatest colleges in the country, or that you have a very limited imagination. Imagination is something that alumni Rob Surette seems to have a bucket full of.

Not sold by cheerleaders, for obvious reasons

Their host (see what I did there?) are the Eighth ranked Greyhounds of Assumption College. At 5-2 overall, with both losses coming in conference, the Greyhounds are looking to rebound from a 49-23 loss to Merrimack. Herb Woodard is averaging just under 100 yards per game on the ground, and QB Andrew Kupec is throwing for 250 yards a game with an efficiency rating of 129.9. Ethan Maxfield has 52 tackles on the year.

Located in Worcester Mass, Assumption College has a proud 106 year history. It was founded and shaped by the Augustinians of the Assumption, a Catholic order that seeks to follow the Augustinian Rule, which includes the ideal of “Common property”. I’m guessing that makes residential living on campus really interesting. The Greyhounds are proud of their new Italian Studies major, which they hope will help students Learn, Achieve, and Contribute. It’s a wonder how alumni Brian Kelly managed to slip through their fingers and end up slumming at Notre Dame… In this economy, I guess you just settle for whatever work you can get.

You may have already been aware of this information, but I didn’t want to, you know, make that assumption.
