Game From Obscurity

Once again, let’s visit the halcyon vistas of small college football- a welcomed respite from solving the world’s biggest problems.

Obscure game of the week: We visit the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for a splendid match-up of valiant foes. Westminster College travels from Fulton Missouri to face Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence Kansas.

The Blue Jays of Westminster have much to be proud about- their athletic legacy includes Hank Iba and Bake McBride. In addition, the campus has seen numerous dignitaries visit, including Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Margaret Thatcher. Ironically, Churchill famously gave his “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster, and Reagan, Thatcher, and Gorbachev worked in their own ways to tear it down in the 80s and 90s. This year’s big symposium on world health is entitled “World Health- Who Cares?”. Yeah, it’s a much more relaxed climate nowadays.

I think Beaver's just swell, Mrs. Cleaver...

I was excited to highlight HINU this week, given the amount of news they’ve generated over the past several months.  Then, I discovered that I’m an idiot. Anyway…

Founded in 1884, Haskell Indian Nations University has been providing educational opportunities for Native Americans and Native Alaskans for over one hundred years. They also hold the distinction of being the only institution of higher education in Lawrence Kansas who hasn’t had a fight between basketball and football players lately. While the Haskell team boasts an obvious mascot/nickname, I think they’re missing a hell of an opportunity here. I’m sure the Haskell’s are way too polite for that, though.
