With the painful, almost unfathomable overtime loss on Saturday in Oakland against the undefeated Golden State Warriors behind them, the Nets return home to Brooklyn for a game before heading back out on the road tomorrow. On Tuesday night, they take on the Atlanta Hawks, who bounced the Nets from the Eastern Conference playoffs last season and defeated them again two weeks ago by a score of 101-87 in Atlanta.
After losing their season opener to the Pistons, the Hawks won seven games in a row before dropping three of their four, with the most recent loss coming two days ago at home against the Utah Jazz. Mike Budenholzer’s team was down by seven with just over two minutes left before storming back to within a point with 33 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks had a chance to win after rebounding a misser Derrick Favors’ jumper but Paul Millsap missed a 16-footer at the buzzer. Utah snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
The Hawks, who have lost consecutive games for the first season all season, are a bit banged-up, as starting point guard Jeff Teague and starting small forward Kent Bazemore are both out tonight due to ankle sprains. Dennis Schroder, who scored a season-high 20 points in the November 4th win over the Nets, will fill in for Teague while Tiago Splitter, a former Spur, will start as the Atlanta lineup goes big without Bazemore.

Final thoughts
After beating the Rockets, the Nets lost to the Kings by one and the Warriors in overtime. Brooklyn, which held double-digit second quarter leads in both of those games, could have easily ended that road trip with a 3-1 record instead of a 1-3 one. Maybe they can take that better-than-normal play and turn it into a surprise win tonight against the undermanned Hawks.
