Game Recap #14: Blue Jackets @ Kings

Another late night game in the California swing ended in victory for the Blue Jackets! Columbus hit the scoreboard early, held on in the middle, and pushed back late. The game was uneven, and the Jackets beat out the host Kings anyway. Atkinson’s great deflection goal from Dubinsky, and Dubinsky’s ricochet goal off a Foligno shot held up for most of the night, and a great 3rd helped the CBJ finish the night in Los Angeles.

Tomorrow night (later today?) the Jackets face off against Anaheim, trying to climb further from the NHL basement.

The Great: Sergei Bobrovsky

Bob was a Top Cop all night long, and he finished the game with a .939 SV%. The goalie was huge part of the Columbus effort in the first two periods, turning aside 22 of 23 Los Angeles shots. Bob was speedy, gave minimal rebounds, and his pads powered his club to a victory. Even though Jeff Carter picked up a late-game tally (with Quick pulled), the Jackets goalie shined through. More of this from Bobrovsky will go a long way to salvaging the season.

The Ugly: The Second Period

If you’re a fan of the physicality, the scrums, the after-the-whistle mayhem? You probably found something entertaining in the middle frame. When the hockey was happening? This was a sluggish, uneventful time for both sides. The Jackets managed to get zero shots on net (something Aaron Portzline says they hadn’t done before), a frustrating show for a team hanging onto a lead.

Of course, LA didn’t do much better. Via Natural Stat Trick, the Kings only managed 11 shots and shot attempts that period (versus the Jackets’ two). 11 combined penalties for both teams slowed the game.

Also Great: The Third Period

The Blue Jackets ignored score effects and went bonkers in the final twenty minutes. The CBJ outshot LA 17-10 at all strengths in the 3rd, a complete flip from the shotless Jackets in the second. And Columbus ultimately needed the insurance: Greg Campbell’s goal gave breathing room and ended up the game-winner.

If You Like The Physical: Rewatch This Game

Los Angeles and Columbus were at each other all night long. Regular fights, goalie slashes, huge hits, piles of human, even a goalie fight tease? This game had everything you’d like! Also some hits you might not like (check out Pete Blackburn’s gif of a Dubinsky collision).

Tweets of the Game

The Campbell soup Tweets flowed like a fine chicken noodle from a vintage can. Take your pick!
