Game Recap 8/6/12: Movin’ on up – Angels 4 Athletics 0

The Angels have finally picked up a much needed game after a rough series in Texas and Chicago with their win over the Athletics tonight. Jered Weaver, the winning pitcher in tonight’s game, led the Angels to victory with a CGO against the Athletics. Now the Angels are back in their rightful spot as the second place team in the AL West, which is much sadder to type out than I realized. They’re finally getting their footing reset as the Wild Card leaders, and once they get back on their feet the run for the division against the Texas Rangers is going to get much hotter.

Untill then, the Angels have quite a bit of catching up to do.

Game Recap

  • The Angels were able to get to a typically dominate Jarrod Parker early, tagging him for 2 runs in the top of the 2nd, which would prove to be the only support Weaver needed. Weaver, in complete contrast to Parker’s 4 ER outing, was able to go all 9 innings in a 4 hit shutout of the Athletics in Oakland tonight. After seeing the bullpen taxed so heavily over the past few series it was necessary for a starting pitcher to give us an outing with at least 7 good innings pitched, and this is what Weaver delivered. This game was no slugfest like the one’s we’ve been seeing as of late, there was no opportunity for the bullpen to implode, Jered Weaver took control from the very beginning. This is something we’ve been desperately lacking in our starting pitching as of late, and hopefully with Weaver’s leadership the rest of the staff can fall into place.

  • The best story of the night, aside from Jered Weaver’s complete game shutout, was Erick Aybars return from the DL. It was disheartening to see a vastly improving Aybar go down so abruptly, but it was clear that his short stint on the DL was not going to impede his progress. Aybar recorded 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring 2 of the Angels 4 runs and driving in a run of his own. As erratic as he was to start off the season Aybar was turning the corner as of late, becoming a dependable starter once again. Much better than the combination of Romine and Izturis that we’ve been having to trudge though the past couple of weeks.
  • This is usually the spot that I save for losing it after a bullpen implosion, but there is no need for that tonight. Sweet.

The Angels have finally picked up a game against Texas! Weaver can’t believe it either.
