After being swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the final series of their homestand, the Angels were looking forward to redeeming themselves on their roadtrip, beginning with a series in Boston.
August hasn't been the kindest to the Angels, but they have a taken the first two of a three game series against the Red Sox and look to sweep the team on their long road to redemption.
Jered Weaver came off of what was arguably one of his worst outings of the season against Tampa Bay, looking for a bounce back game himself. Weaver threw a solid seven innings and was supported by a dominate offense. Tonight, there were glimpses of the team we all saw immediately before the all star break, and I don't hate it.
Game Notes:
– Albert Pujols left the game in the 4th inning due to tightness in his calf. It seems to be a day to day, precautionary measure. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure.
– Jered Weaver bounced back from his atrocious start against Tampa Bay last week and looked like the ace we all know and love. Allowing two runs and seven hits, Weaver threw seven innings of great baseball, with one rough inning.
– Howie Kendrick, Maicer Izturis, Erik Aybar and Chris Iannetta all pulled through with a multi-hit game. The bottom of the order for the Angels acts as a secret weapon. You don't find the most power coming from Izzy and Aybar, but their scrappy at the plate. Iannetta is presence at the plate that the Angels have been looking for since Mike Napoli. Kendrick was the only home run of the game this evening, and although he still isn't producing as many expected in beginning of the season, he comes up clutch from time to time. That's better than never.
– Torii Hunter's numbers have improved since he's been moved up to the two spot and really, who wouldn't love hitting behind a guy with an OBP like Mike Trout? Hunter drove in two runs with a double this evening and continues to play aggressively on defense. Nothing less expected from a veteran, Gold Glove outfielder.
Halo Hero:
Solid team victory tonight, guys.
Tonight's game was the definition of a team win. When the offense and the defense click, you know you're on to something good.
There's a win streak in the near future. I feel it.
