After getting let down by the bullpen last night, Angels will turn to Jered Weaver to try and get the Angels back on the winning track. Weaver has been fantastic so far this year, but I think he might be in for some trouble in the new Coors Field Yankee Stadium.
Weaver’s extreme flyball tendencies (38 flyball outs, 17 ground ball out so far this season) combined with the jet stream blowing out to right field could spell big trouble. The Yankees already feature a line-up with at least seven lefties or switch-hitters, so don’t think for one second they aren’t actively trying to bust a few homers to the short porch in right. I hope the fans in the right field bleachers bring their gloves tonight.
What to Watch For:
- As I talked about earlier today, this begins a five-game run in which the Angels will face four southpaw starters. If they don’t play Brandon Wood during that stretch, they might as well just send him back to Salt Lake and buy him a house there since they clearly don’t want him in Anaheim. (UPDATE: The preliminary line-up has Wood sitting with Napoli at DH, Mathis at C, FIggins at 3B and Aybar at SS).
- How many bases will the Angels swipe tonight? The over/under is 2.5. I’m taking the under only because Andy Pettitte is so good at holding runners.
- Can the bullpen hold it together tonight. Shields and Speier have both pitched two days in a row, so they’ll have to call on the Salt Lake All-Stars if Weaver can’t go deep into the game.
