Well, I guess if there is a silver lining to the the Angels sweep at the hands of the Texas Rangers it is that John Lackey gets to make a second season debut.  We’re just going to pretend that him dotting Ian Kinsler really doesn’t count.

Kinsler gets beaned

Quit your whining, Kinsler, it didn’t even hurt.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the Angels’ season thus far isn’t that they have had so many injuries, but that all their struggles have come against their AL West brethren.  Going 5-9 against arguably the weakest division in the American League is hardly the way a defending division champ wants to start a season.

Now the Angels go from facing a streaking Rangers club to a plummeting Mariners team.  Seattle comes into the series having lost 6 of their last 20 games.  Remember when everyone was talking about how the Mariners had really turned things around after they started off so hot in April?  Yeah, not so much now.

Hopefully, the Halos can kick them while their down, something that shouldn’t be problem tonight considering Big John is carrying a 27 inning scoreless streak at Safeco into the game.  All he needs to do now is avoid get that first pitch near the plate and all should be well in the world again.

Questions of the Night:

  • How many pitches will Lackey last?  Since Ichiro didn’t smack two homers off the Halos the night before, I suspect that Lackey has a pretty good chance of making it into double-digits tonight.
  • Who will bat second tonight?  Scioscia seems to be filling out the two-hole by drawing names out of a hat lately, so don’t be shocked if somehow Robb Quinlan gets tapped for that particular duty.
