Gamecocks Baseball Field Report: Auburn Edition

South Carolina hosted Auburn in Columbia and swept the series 3 games to none.

Breaking it Down
…The Gamecocks sent Michael Roth to the mound on Friday which produced the expected result.  Roth pitched 8 great innings and allowed only one run.  On most any night that would be enough to pick up the win, but the Gamecock offense couldn’t push many runs across early and didn’t have many opportunities late.  It was in the bottom of the ninth that South Carolina finally put everything together.  Robert Beary was hit by a pitch to begin the inning.  DeSean Anderson sacrificed him to second, and Peter Mooney singled him to third.  Scott Wingo then hit a deep fly ball that dropped to win the game.

On Saturday Colby Holmes pitched 7.1 nice innings but was outshone by USC’s offense.  Brady Thomas, Jake Williams, Scott Wingo and Evan Marzilli all had 2 hits as the Gamecocks pounded out 11 hits and 10 runs.  Auburn only managed two runs and was no match for the national champs.
On Sunday South Carolina finished off the sweep.  South Carolina scored 7 runs in 5 innings and held the Tigers to three runs.  Forrest Koumas started and went 5 innings to pick up the win.  Matt Price closed the game, but not before loading the bases in the ninth and getting a Scott Wingo to Peter Mooney double play to end the game.

What to Take From the Weekend
…The Gamecocks continue to plug along.  They keep overcoming injuries and keep winning.  You can’t be anything other than satisfied.  They’re winning so much, I wonder if they can keep it up through the post season.  If they can keep it going it will be great to watch the pennant race with Vanderbilt and Florida down the stretch.

This and that
…The Gamecocks are 35-8 and 17-4 in conference.  They are an astounding 26-3 at home.  South Carolina continues to be highly ranked owing two #1 spots, two #2 spots and one inexplicable #3 ranking.

Up next
…The Gamecocks hit the road now.  They play at Wofford on Wednesday night and then travel to Oxford to play Ole Miss this weekend.
