Gamecocks Basketball: Bruce Ellington to the Rescue

Will Bruce Ellington resuce the South Carolina Gamecocks basketball team?  The Gamecocks need a boost and should get it when their starting point guard from last year, Bruce Ellington, rejoins the squad.

Ellington had been a member of the football team since this past summer and now that the football regular season has concluded, he has been given the okay by Coach Steve Spurrier to get back to being a basketball player.  On the gridiron, he had 17 catches for 211 yards and one touchdown.

For the Gamecocks basketball team, this addition is a welcomed sight as they are in need of offensive production.

Ellington, who practiced Monday with the Gamecock basketball team for the first time since last March, led the Gamecocks in scoring last season at nearly 13 points per game.  He also had a team high 97 assists.   That type of production is needed for Coach Darrin Horn’s squad as they have been floundering of late with losses to Elon, Tennesse State, North Carolina and Southern California.

He could see time for the Gamecock basketball team for the first time this season on Thursday night when Providence plays in Columbia as part of the SEC-Big East Challenge.  If not then, certainly you will see him on Sunday when the Gamecocks face rival Clemson.

The question with him now is how quickly he can transition.  He is a play-maker and USC needs him heading into SEC Conference play.  Not saying he is the saving grace but it is certainly a boost for the squad and should help them remain competitive going forward.
