The University of South Carolina rewarded the Gamecocks football coaching staff with more money and rightfully so. The USC football team has had back-to-back-to-back 11 win seasons which is simply impressive.
Here is a quick rundown of some of the highlights of action taken by the Board of Trustees:
– Spurrier will now make $4 million, which is an increase of $700,000 per year. His contract was extended from 2017 until 2018 under the new contract.
– Lorenzo Ward is now making $750,000 per year over three years with a contract expiring on January 31, 2017. All other assistants are on two year deals.
– G.A. Mangus will receive $290,000 for the 2014 season and $320,000 for the 2015 season. This was a much needed boost after he had not had a raise for awhile.
– Also Spurrier gets some incentives, they are: a $100,000 bonus if the Gamecocks participate in a postseason bowl game other than the Capital One Bowl or a college football playoff game. Spurrier will receive $200,000 if the football team participates in the Capital One Bowl or a college football playoff game (i.e., Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl, Chick-fil-A Bowl, Cotton Bowl or Fiesta Bowl). He will receive $250,000 if the team participates in the semifinal of the college football playoff. He will receive an additional $100,000 if South Carolina plays in the playoff championship game and $200,000 if he wins that game.
– Lastly, USC offered Spurrier an opportunity to serve as a special advisor to the president and athletics director when he finishes his coaching career.
Well, there you go. Money makes the college football go-around and for USC to keep up…this is a move that was needed and deserved.
