USC quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus is being mentioned as a potential candidate for the Temple head coaching job. He shrugged off questions about his interest in the job Friday, saying it was only because he had ties to the area and would only talk about interviewing “when and if there’s any situation.”
Mangus spent four years as head coach at Delaware Valley, near Temple in Philadelphia, where he won 35 games and turned the program into a Division III national contender.
From our standpoint, say no Mr. Mangus. Certainly it is a honor to be in the mix, if true, but stick around South Carolina. The weather is warmer and you have been able to do some much needed things around Columbia. You have been the key “cushion” between Spurrier and Garcia. You have helped the offense, helped in recruiting, and helped to get a SEC East Division crown in 2010. Good things are brewing and the results of doing it at South Carolina will pay off a “wee” bit bigger in the long run if you stay around the Palmetto State. Don’t get us wrong as Temple surely is a great job and being your own boss is a good thing. But what you and the rest of the coaching staff has accomplished and will accomplish will have a larger impact than heading north to take over the Owls program. This is a bias outlook but to boil it down….USC needs ya and surely you want to stick around to see “the fruits of the labor” in 2011 as it will be a special year.
