Gamecocks Lose to Auburn in SEC Championship Game

The South Carolina Gamecocks lost to the Auburn Tigers by the score of 56-17.  Cam Newton proved too much as the Gamecocks could not keep up with nor stop his production.   The Gamecocks now await a bowl invite and the Tigers of Auburn head to the National Championship.

A few things –

I will save the game recaps for the media writers.  Let’s talk three things –

First, I hope Auburn wins and represents the SEC well in the national championship.  They are good.

Second, Newton passed for a career-high 335 yards and four touchdowns, plus ran for a pair of TDs in an Heisman performance.  He is the best player in CFB.  Despite the off the field stuff, he is the best on the field of play.  Give him the trophy.

Third, the Gamecocks had a poor outing on both sides of the ball.  Credit Auburn.  The Gamecocks did not take advantage of opportunites and had poor play in the secondary early.  The Hail Mary to close out the first half broke the spirit of SC.

Ugly loss on the national stage but don’t complain too loudly or hang your head for SC.  It was/is a great season.

The Gamecocks finish the season 9-4 and are the winners of the SEC Eastern Division crown.  This is the first divisional crown in the SEC for South Carolina.  It is only the third nine win season in SC history.  In the last four years, USC has won 29 games.  That is the best four year stretch for USC ever.  Also the Gamecocks went undefeated in the “orange crush” for the first time ever (beat UT, UF and Clemson) in the same season.

This season was great.  Yes, disappointed that the SEC Championship was not won but still proud of the Gamecocks football team.  There is still one goal on the table and that is the bowl win no matter where it is.  The sun will come up tomorrow and preparations are to be made for a 1oth win in whatever the bowl game ends up being.  Keep the faith South Carolina fans as the best is yet to come for USC.
