Rumors this evening out of the Gamecocks football camp indicate USC WR Tori Gurley is going pro. Phil Kornbult indicated that two sources are confirming to him that Tori Gurley will play his last game as a Gamecock in the Chick-fil-a Bowl then take his game to the next level. You may recall that last week, Gurley and redshirt junior offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins submitted paperwork to the NFL to have their draft projection evaluated.
My opinion on this is – Mr. Gurley don’t do it but I know you did not ask me. You have huge upside as you are raw really in being a past basketball player that gave the football route a try. Stay and learn. It will pay off.
Don’t get me wrong as Gurley has the talent and size for a future pro career but he could really use another year in the college game. In 2010, Gurley finished the season with 42 catches for 416 yards and 4 touchdowns. Those number do not jump out at any scout even if you are 6’6 230.
I understand he feels old, as he is 23 year old redshirt sophomore, but don’t rush into this as it could prove not a smart play like Clifton Geathers. You may recall Geathers declared early, against the advice of coaches, and has bounced around the NFL (he recently was picked up by Dallas but has yet to play).
Tori, you have until 1/15/11 to put your name in the draft. Take time to see the writing on the wall that this is a bad move. Give it one more year.
