A look ahead at the Spurs games for the week.
Date: Wednesday, December 17
Team: New Orleans Hornets (A)
TV: ESPN
Why you should care: These two teams met in the Western Conference Semifinals last year with the Spurs winning in an exciting seven games. Many bloggers/journalists thought the Hornets would make a big jump this season with James Posey aboard, but they have looked disjointed at times this season. As of Sunday, the Spurs held a half game lead on the Hornets, making this an important early season game as far as who will win the division. A nationally televised game, this is a chance for the Spurs to make a statement on the road.
Editor’s Note: Be sure to check out the pre-game podcast with Hornets Hype, preview Q&A with Hornets.com and our live blog during the game.
Date: Thursday, December 18
Team: Orlando Magic (A)
TV: TNT
Why you should care: The Magic are currently third in the East with an 18-6 record. This will be a tough game for the Spurs because it’s the second in a brutal back-to-back on the road. If the Spurs can pull off both wins, it would be a huge sign to the rest of the league that they are back. Also, this is a chance to see Dwight Howard’s freakish shoulders. Seriously, this man is built like a Greek sculpture, highlighting the perfection of the human body. While his skills need work, I don’t care too much when his athleticism is comic book-like.
Date: Saturday, December 20
Team: Toronto Raptors (H)
TV: KRRT 35
Why you should care: Toronto was supposed to challenge for a top playoff spot in the East with Chris Bosh, Jermaine O’Neal and Jose Calderon. Instead, they have slumped to a 10-13 start and fired their coach. Not exactly what was expected. I love Bosh’s game and Calderon is one of the best passing point guards in the NBA, but the Raps are underperforming. I’m always weary of changing coaches midseason, so it will be interesting to see how the Raps respond.
