On the 150th anniversary of La Salle University, the La Salle Explorers took on the Boise State Broncos in the 13 seed play in game tonight. Many experts and a lot of people did not know what to expect from the Explorers but tonight they came out and put on an offensive clinic on national tv.
The Explorers started out this game hot from the three point line and continued that through the rest of the game. Guard Sam Mills hit many three pointers tonight for the Explorers especially in the first half as La Salle looked to increase their lead. Mills finished the game with 15 points and was 5 of 6 from three point range. The Explorers shot 52.4 percent from the three point line that is outstanding and that led them to win the game tonight.
What also helped them win tonight was that Ramon Galloway finally came back to life. He scored 21 points, hit three pointers, and drove to the lane consistently. When Galloway does all those things, he shows why he was the second leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 this season.
His backcourt mate, Tyreek Duren had an off night but that is okay because the Explorers got a huge contribution off the bench from Tyrone Garland. Garland was basically unstoppable as he was hitting threes and driving through the lane with quickness and toughness. He finished the game with 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting.
Lastly in this game you cannot forget about the presence of big man Jerrell Wright. Without center Steve Zack, the Explorers needed Wright to step up and he did. In tonight’s game he had 13 points and six rebounds.
With tonight’s win, the Explorers get their first NCAA tournament win since 1990; it’s been a long time. The La Salle Explorers now advance to the round of 64 and take on the number four seed Kansas State Wildcats out of the Big 12 on Friday at 3:10 pm.
