The Round of 16 at Eurobasket continued Sunday where Pau Gasol (Spain) and Davis Bertans (Latvia) found themselves as victors following their games, but Adam Hanga and Hungary faced defeat when the final buzzer expired.
Though Gasol and Spain ended up beating Turkey by 17 points (73-56), for the majority of the game, the score was a lot closer than the end product, as Philadelphia 76ers forward Furkan Korkmaz (20 points) and Turkey stayed within striking distance of Spain before Espana eventually pulled away in the latter half of the fourth quarter. Gasol finished with 11 points (4-6 shooting), seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks during his 33 minutes of play. His brother Marc chipped in 10 points and five rebounds, while fellow Spanish players Ricky Rubio added 15 points and Sergio Rodriguez brought forth 11 points and nine assists.
Spain will get to rest Monday before resuming play Tuesday against Atlanta Hawks guard Dennis Schroder, Boston Celtics forward Daniel Theis and Germany. That game will tip-off Tuesday at 10:45 AM CST.
Bertans and Latvia Advance Past Montenegro
Latvia cruised past Montenegro 100-68 to advance to the next round at Eurobasket. Latvia was led by New York Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis with 19 points and Jannis Timma with 21 points. Bertans added five points though he didn’t get many shot attempts (2-5 shooting) and he only played 15 minutes in the game.
Latvia will also have a day off Monday before playing Slovenia Tuesday at 1:30 PM CST.
Hanga and Hungary Eliminated by Serbia
Hungary fell into an early double-digit hole against Serbia, but though Hungary did bring the score closer within 10 points in the fourth quarter, Serbia still held on for the victory. It wasn’t the best shooting day for Hanga, as he finished with one point (0-7 shooting), four assists and one rebound in 23 minutes.
