A bit of good news, and a bit of bad news to kick off August. We always start with the bad news first. That is I got sunburnt yesterday. A nation grieves with me. I think #BearcatBlogBurnt will be a trending topic on twitter for the next week.
The real bad news is that the finalist roster for the US team for the college world olympic games came out and Yancy Gates was not on it. The list, right from the site, of the 14 guys in competition for 12 spots are:
Tim Abromaitis (Notre Dame/Unionville, Conn.); Marcus Denmon (Missouri/Kansas City, Mo.); Ashton Gibbs(Pittsburgh/Scotch Plains, N.J.); Draymond Green (Michigan State/Saginaw, Mich.); JaMychal Green(Alabama/Montgomery, Ala.); Scoop Jardine (Syracuse/Philadelphia, Pa.); John Jenkins (Vanderbilt/ Hendersonville, Tenn.); Orlando Johnson (UC Santa Barbara/Seaside, Calif.); Greg Mangano (Yale/Orange, Conn.); Trevor Mbakwe (Minnesota/ St. Paul, Minn.); Ray McCallum (Detroit Mercy/Beverly Hills, Mich.);Darius Miller (Kentucky/Maysville, Ky.); Aaric Murray (West Virginia/Philadelphia, Pa.); and Shabazz Napier(Connecticut/Randolph, Mass.).
As you can see, a couple of Big East names are still around, Ashton Gibbs, Scoop Jardine, Aaric Murray, SHABAZZ Napier and Tim Abromaitis. Tim Abromaitis’ acne was cut from the team, along with Gates. This sucks for Gates. His was on the record of saying how excited he was for the chance of playing with the team. Maybe this will be on of those things that inspires Gates this season, and he makes Matt Painter and co pay for cutting him. Or, he will become incredibly depressed, eat nothing but Krispy Kreme, and come into the season weighing 320 lbs. I think with the determination Gates showed late in the year, it will be the first, or the former.
In good Bearcats news, Butch Jones got a big 4 star QB recruit to sign for next season. Bennie Coney is a 4 star recruit from Plant City, Florida. Rivals has him rated the 7th best QB, and the 44th best player in Florida. His rating on their 6.1 scale, is a 5.8. Coney is a dual threat QB. He ran for 360 yards and 5 TDs, while throwing for 1,150 yards, 12 TDs and 8 INTs.
As Down the Drive pointed out earlier, the Bearcats have been swinging big for QBs. They hit a home run here. Coney will fit in nicely at the QB position. The Bearcats have the QB of the future in Munchie Leagux, and the QB that will change the fate of UC football forever with his amazing talent and natural ability, Patrick Coyne. Did I ever talk about how Patrick went to my high school?
All in all, you take the good, you take the bad, and there you have the facts of life. Those are the facts of life for Cincinnati sports today.
