There was a surprising number of people who were expecting Georgia Tech to win this game. I’m looking at you College Game Day. Despite coming into the game as the #2 team in the Nation against the rush, it was chalked up to Georgia having “not beaten anybody.” I think that’s the worst argument in sports right now. Honestly, the majority of teams in college football, not named LSU, haven’t beaten anybody. If you think a team is going to beat another one tell us why. Don’t just say one team hasn’t beaten anybody, say “triple option” and then drool. It doesn’t make sense. I predicted Georgia 31-17 and I usually don’t toot my own horn but I hit the nail on the head.
Georgia’s defense didn’t dominate Tech but they did a good job of not giving up the big play. Georgia Tech averages 469 yards a game in Total Offense and Georgia gave up 355. Anytime you can hold a team to 100 yards under their season average, that’s a good thing. Georgia also held Tech to 1.2 yards per carry below their normal average. It wasn’t a dominating performance but Georgia did what they needed to do to win the game. Tech came in averaging 36 points per game and left 19 points below their average and with their lowest point total in over a month (and second lowest of the year).
On offense, Georgia clicked in the passing game today. Aaron Murray was on and he hit four different Georgia receivers for TDs (Chris Conley, Michael Bennett, Aron White and Tavarres King). Not only did he hit 4 different receivers for TDs but he hit 8 different receivers on the day. One of the things Murray has been getting better at is spreading the ball around to his various receivers and helping Georgia not be as predictable in the passing game. Georgia scored early with their passing game and caused Tech to press a little and throw the ball more than they wanted to. Getting out to an early lead also allowed Georgia to be more conservative in the second half and just kind of coast to victory.
Georgia can now look ahead to the SEC Championship Game and the LSU Tigers. Everybody is quick to pencil in LSU a “W” in this one and while I agree that LSU is most definitely the favorite, crazier things have happened. That’s why they play the games. I think LSU has a clear advantage in two areas (LSU’s DL vs Georgia’s DL and Special Teams). The biggest question mark for Georgia against LSU is going to be how Georgia’s OL will stand up against the LSU defensive line. Can they give Aaron Murray time to throw the ball? Can they open up holes for a returning Isaiah Crowell? Can they make Georgia turn the ball over and get points or a short field with their defense? I think Georgia’s defense matches up well with LSU’s offense so it’s going to come down to the Georgia offense against the LSU defense as the key match-up in this one.
