Georgia Takes Series from Seminoles

After a 3-0 start, it was a tough week for No. 12 Florida State. The Seminoles opened the week with a loss at Jacksonville on Wednesday. Florida State bounced back to take the series-opener in Athens over Georgia, but were swept in a doubleheader on Saturday to fall to 4-3 for the season. Florida State will aim to bounce back this week with four home games — one against Jacksonville and three against UNC-Wilmington.

Friday, February 20th

John Sansone tied a career-high with 4 RBIs including his first home run of the season as Florida State rallied to top Georgia in the series-opener. The Seminoles led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the 6th before the Bulldogs plated four runs, going ahead on a 2-run double by first baseman Jared Walsh. FSU answered with three runs in the top of the 7th as a 2-run double by Sansone put the Seminoles ahead for good. With two runners on in the bottom of the 9th, FSU pitcher Billy Strode picked off Georgia’s Brandon Stephens to end the game.

Saturday, February 21st (Game 1)

Georgia’s Ryan Lawlor allowed just a run on four hits in six innings while striking out 10 to lead the Bulldogs past FSU. Jared Walsh homered and drove in three runs to lead Georgia. Center fielder Ben DeLuzio had two of Florida State’s five hits and drove in the only Seminole run.

Saturday, February 21st (Game 2)

D.J. Stewart’s first home run of the season helped Florida State build a 2-0 lead, but the wheels fell off for the FSU pitching staff during the middle innings. Georgia scored three runs in each the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead. Keegan McGovern went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored for Georgia while third baseman Trevor Kieboom homered and scored three times in the victory. John Sansone drove in a pair of runs for the Seminoles in the loss.
