Mike McCarthy was named the fourteenth head coach in team history on January 12, 2006. Having led Green Bay to the playoffs in three of his five seasons as head coach, he joined Vince Lombardi and Mike Holmgren as the only coaches to guide the Packers to a Super Bowl title with a win over Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLV. Joined Pittsburgh’s Bill Cowher (2005) as the only Super Bowl-winning coaches to lead their respective teams to three road wins as the No. 6 seed in the postseason en route to a world title.
Including playoffs, Green Bay’s 25 wins the past two seasons rank third in the NFL behind only New Orleans and Indianapolis. His .714 winning percentage (5- 2) in the playoffs is tied for first among active NFL coaches, matching the mark of Bill Belichick (15-6) and Mike Tomlin (5-2). The offense has ranked in the top 10 in total yards each of his five seasons as head coach, accumulating most points (461), fewest turnovers (16) and third most yards (6,065) in team history in 2009. Named Motorola Coach of the Year, matched a franchise record with 13 wins, and won NFC North Division title in 2007.
Became the first coach since Lombardi to lead Packers to a championship game in his second season. McCarthy returned to Green Bay after serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach in 1999. Was then a highly successful offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (2000-04). With McCarthy calling plays, he was named NFC Assistant Coach of the Year by USA Today in 2000, and New Orleans led the league with 432 points and 49 touchdowns in 2002. The list of quarterbacks he has coached includes Joe Montana, Elvis Grbac, Rich Gannon, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks, Jake Delhomme, Marc Bulger, Steve Bono, and Jeff Blake—a collection that has combined for 36 career Pro Bowl selections and 10 Super Bowl starts.
