It seems that the trade rumors regarding Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. begin swirling at the end of every regular-season campaign, and this year is no different.
OBJ did keep his emotions in check on the field for the most part, but he didn’t appear to be fond of the team’s playcalling in a few games this season. His production declined, but he didn’t see as many vertical targets as he’s used to getting, as the team attempted to go with a more quick/short passing game to keep Eli Manning upright, and also Saquon Barkley’s touches had an effect as well. Beckham suffered a quadricep injury in the team’s Week 13 game, and he was shut down for the rest of the season as a result — likely for precautionary reasons.
General manager Dave Gettleman was asked about the trade rumors by reporters on Wednesday, and he shot them down.
“We didn’t sign him to trade him. If that’s what you’re asking,” he said, via Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.
He continued:
“Well so he didn’t play the last four games, right? Listen, you can’t — the bottom line is, you want him on the field. Ya know?” the GM said. “I have this crazy idea that he’s a great player so let’s get him on the field. But unfortunately he got the leg whip (in a Week 12 loss at Philadelphia). And those calves (Beckham actually injured his quadriceps) can be funny things. They really can. So, ya know, the offense did what it did with him. And it did what it did without him.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean the team isn’t shopping him, for the right offer, but it does look like the Giants are looking to retain OBJ at the present time. Stay tuned.
