On April 23, 1914, the Federal League Chifeds (yes, that’s correct) played the first baseball game at the new Weeghman Park. The Chifeds defeated the visiting Kansas City Packers 9-1.
You might know this Weeghman place better as Wrigley Field.
And after 100 seasons of baseball, the Cardinals suffered the same fate as their cross-state Missouri brethren on the Cubs’ last home game of 2014.
Not too wax too poetic, but the 3-1 ball game might as well been played in midst in the early 20th century, for a lengthy and depression awaits Cardinal Nation sooner, it appears, than later. It’s hard to win in October when your 2-3-4-5 hitters go 1 for 12.
The one being a generous scoring technicality.
It’s an old story, really. One that stretches way back to April. Just as soon as we believe a corner has been turned, a new wall seems to appear. A win by the Braves against the Pirates was the only thing preventing this two hour and forty one minutes of futile flailing from becoming a roaring tire fire.
Math was never my strong suit… but a ‘magic number’ of 3 with 3 games to play seems tenuous.
If you’re looking for trenchant insight and pertinent analysis, may I suggest you join me in waving the white flag. What’s the point of trying to figure out what’s going on with this team anymore? You could tell me they’d lose 4 straight and the season would be over – I’d believe it.
You could tell me that they’d win the World Series – I’d believe it.
There is no rhyme. Reason has been lost for months. We’re on a roller-coaster that has jumped the tracks. And where it’s headed is beyond the realm of knowledge. It’s time to just enjoy Cardinals baseball while we have it.
Be it a week or a month.
