Glasnow nearly ready for Pittsburgh Pirates

Alternating rough and solid outings, Tyler Glasnow still needs to develop continued consistency in order to be able to join the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Oh, he dazzled.  Six innings of two hit, one walk shutout pitching for Tyler Glasnow for the Indianapolis Indians at Durham today. He was painting the corners and getting hitters to swing through his breaking pitches. So far this season, Glasnow has seven walks in 21.0 innings over four starts, but that wouldn’t paint the whole picture.

Over his four starts, Glasnow has walked 3, 0, 3, and 1, respectively.  However, his 3.0 BB/9 rate so far would be the lowest of his career. For comparison, Gerrit Cole’s BB/9 rate was 3.7 in 2013 at Indianapolis before being promoted.  Cole now averages about 2.2 BB/9 at the major league level.  Glasnow also struck out 11 over those six innings today to bring his season total to 30. Glasnow has a K/9 rate of 12.86 so far this season, which would be second only to his rate of 13.3 in 2013 with the West Virginia Power. He also lowered his ERA to 2.57.

Glasnow’s relative consistency to eat innings, despite a history of control problems, and keep his team in games is what made turned him from a relatively no name prospect to one of the best in baseball.

The only two things under his control holding him back were the command of the offspeed and breaking pitches, particularly the changeup, and control issues.  Now, with Glasnow seemingly under control on the mound and both the changeup and curveball looking crisp today, the last two dominos may be in the process of falling for him to be considered major league ready, provided he stops alternating good and bad outings on control.

Given some time to show continued consistency over a few more starts and dodge the Super 2 deadline, Tyler Glasnow could be in a race once again with Jameson Taillon to see who gets the call first.
